Marmoset is seeking a Full Stack Software Developer.
What you should know: We’ve got a Tech Team consisting of developers, a Product Owner, and a Software Development Manager. We’re all about Scrum. As part of a small team, our developers are responsible for building and maintaining our end-to-end software lifecycle.
Since we’re a small team, our developers contribute to the full stack as needed. Developers must be open and motivated to learn and grow outside of specific specialties. Our (large and complex!) application supports critical business functions for both our internal staff and our clients: sales order process, music catalog storage and curation, organizing music projects and delivery, e-commerce platform, accounting system integration, and more. This means it’s a lot to maintain, and also offers lots of opportunities to find new creative approaches.
It’s critical for the person in this role to be able to work well both independently and collaboratively, as we’re a self-organizing team that moves quickly together. Giving and asking for help is more important around here than an “expert” mindset. While we may operate casually and unconventionally in some ways, we embrace the freedom to be truly agile, self-organizing and creative.
Our main focus for the next 12 months: 1) Product-focused innovation by developing new features and improvements to level up user experience for our clients and optimizing the existing workflows for our internal staff, 2) Building towards a more modern stack and flexible architecture to support sustained growth.
We are currently on the latest version of Rails (5.2+), Ruby (2.6.1) and React (16.8+).
This opportunity includes the following technical requirements:
- A sound understanding of business logic as it applies to development and architecture
- Possess a solid methodology for developing and managing clean, readable, maintainable code and writing unit, integration, and E2E tests (we use Rspec and Cypress)
- Working knowledge of open-source database server technology (PostgreSQL, GraphQL)
- Proficient in version control (we use git)
Nice to have:
- Experience with GraphQL/Apollo
- Experience with React or any modern frameworks/libraries (Vue, Angular, etc.)
- Experience with ActiveAdmin
- Database Design
Third-party services we use:
- AWS S3 (for asset storage)
- Prismic (CMS)
- New Relic & Scout (for app monitoring)
- Jira (for project management)
Basics: You love what you do and you’re looking to do something rewarding that makes a difference in the world. Or maybe you’re sick of the grind at a bigger company and are seeking a refreshing culture where quality of life and people’s lives matter the most. If this sounds like you, keep reading.
Personality: Self starter with a contagious “can do” attitude. Thick skin. Able to regularly accept failure and/or critical feedback and grow from it. Unflappable: succeeds in a highly creative, fast paced environment. Calm and cool under pressure and you are rarely ruffled by stress. You play well with others and communicate openly in a constructive, respectful way when you’re not in agreement with something.
Abilities: Excellent communicator, strong researcher, attentive listener, fast learner. You have the ability to prioritize based on value and timelines. You’re proactive, resourceful and are able to dig in and figure things out. You can see the forest through the trees — able to focus on the project at hand, in addition to the big picture.
Passion: You have a heart for innovation and for constantly taking things to the next level. You love collaboration, teamwork, and thrive in a fun, familial, highly creative environment. Passion for music, arts and community is a plus.
Pay: This is a mid-level role with compensation DOE.

We Respect and Embrace our Differences:
- We respect and honor our unique identities, backgrounds, experiences, and cultures.
- We are dedicated to creating a safe space for those underrepresented in our community.
- We recognize that there is a system of gatekeepers in the music community, and our goal is to level the playing field.
- We acknowledge that each individual has experienced a unique journey that led to their arrival at Marmoset.
At Marmoset, we are committed to providing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for our employees, clients, vendors, and all people within our community.
We understand that diversity isn’t a box to check, but rather a lens to look through at all times. We strive to keep diversity, equity, and inclusion at the center of every decision we make as a company, at all levels.
The music industry we serve is traditionally not diverse, equitable, or inclusive, and we aim to shatter these traditions, both internally and externally.
WHAT WE DO:
Marmoset is a full-service music agency, representing a highly curated roster of diverse and rare artists, bands, record labels and vintage recordings for music licensing. Our team scours the planet to deliver the perfect song for any project.
Marmoset Studio goes beyond music licensing, where our award-winning Music Production Team collaborates with artists and bands to record original music, sound design and custom scores for every need.
Create or license music for any project — all in one place.
Marmoset is the only purpose-driven, certified B Corporation in the industry, investing 10% of profits directly back into the community.
WHO WE ARE:
Marmoset’s humble beginnings go something like this: On a typically cloudy Portland morning in 2010, two friends met-up for coffee to dream-up a new kind of music agency —one with strong values, a focus on people, and a passion for building community. The result was Marmoset, now a globally recognized creative agency, collaborating closely with hundreds of wonderfully obscure and diverse artists, bands and record labels, connecting music with creators and makers across the planet.
In 2019, we were honored to become the first purpose-driven, certified B Corporation in the music industry — still firmly rooted in community, strong values and togetherness.
